The class of 1984 graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, Sanders began his career in animation as a character designer for the 1980s Saturday morning cartoon Muppet Babies. He as well served as a storyboard artist, artistic director, and character designer in many more Disney alive features, among the babies Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan.
